Nuts for weight loss

For years, people trying to lose weight shunned almonds, peanuts, and other seeds and nuts. They were told that these foods were high in fat and were to be avoided. Thankfully, nutrition science has come around and we know better.

Nuts are a great source of beneficial unsaturated fats and omega-3 fatty acids. Nuts are also a good source of fiber. The fat and fiber help you feel full for a longer period of time compared to low-fat highly refined carb based snacks. Nuts are also helpful in reducing the levels of bad cholesterol in the blood.

When selecting nuts, choose the least processed products you can find. This means unsalted and unroasted nuts, which are often found in bulk bins in supermarkets.

If you don’t like the texture of nuts or the residue in between your teeth, nut butters are a great option as well. Nothing like peanut butter on tart Granny Smith apple slices! Again, look for peanut butter made with just peanuts. Many commercial brands add sugar and oils to their butters, so watch out.
