Breakfast – to Skip or Not to Skip?

Is breakfast really the most important meal of the day? For people trying to lose weight, the automatic answer is yes. The logic is simple – skipping breakfast will lead to extreme hunger a few hours later, and thus to an uncontrollable binge before noon. Eating a good filling breakfast, on the other hand, will help avoid hunger pangs throughout the morning and early noon hours.

There is some evidence to back up this claim. Data from the National Weight Control Registry (NWCR), shows that 78 percent of the registrants report eating breakfast daily. The average registrant has lost 67 pounds and kept them off for over 5 and a half years.

While this seems like overwhelming evidence in favor of eating breakfast, please note that one out of five (22%) successful dieters do not eat breakfast!

So what’s a budding dieter supposed to do?

Find what works for you. Each person’s metabolism works differently. If you can’t bring yourself to eat breakfast within 60 minutes of waking up, it’s not the end of the world.

More important than when you eat, is what you eat.

If you wait too long with feelings of hunger, you are more susceptible to eating unhealthy fare. That’s why you should always have healthy options available to you at home, the office, or your bag.
